Few modern European political figures have been so thoroughly sketched and caricatured as Angela Merkel. And for good reason: the outgoing German chancellor has been in power longer than any other elected leader on the continent (excluding, of course, the autocrats in Moscow, Ankara and Minsk). Furthermore, for better or worse, Berlin's starring role on the European stage, and Merkel’s political longevity, have often made "Mutti" – "mommy", as some Germans call her – the face of the “faceless” European Union. As Merkel prepares to stand down following the imminent federal election, we offer a selection of editorial cartoons featuring the chancellor from the last ten years, while journalist Paul Ostwald offers a personal account of "generation Merkel".
